Iwantja Creek marks the place where Tjurki, the owl, rested on his travels. The community grew up nearby on what was an excision of Granite Downs cattle Station, some eight kiometres from the Stuart highway. Iwantja Arts started in the early 1980s when a committed group of artists travelled to Canberra to advocate for the development of the art centre. Like other APY art centres, early work included traditional wood carving (punu), batik, patchwork, tie-dying and painting. Iwantja became well known for print making. The art centre today provides professional development for a number of artists with clearly individual styles.
