The Akurra is significant in Adnyamathanha culture as creation spirits which took the form of  serpents. Akurra have played a big part in Adnyamathanha culture and created and shaped the Flinders Ranges. The Akurra were so big and heavy that as they moved across the land the long body carved out the land and created the creeks, gorges and mountains. The Akurra created the landscape and also carry deep cultural significance. Understanding the story of the Akurra and how they shaped the Flinders Ranges adds layers of meaning to the landscape and demonstrates Adnyamathanha peoples ancestral past and ongoing connection to the land and their culture.
