Urti is a favourite bushfood for many people. Urti are ready to eat in September/October and ever since I was a kid I can remember going out each year in search of Urti trees. When we found them we would collect as many as we could reach to eat, dry, or stew for dessert. Urti is not only a delicious food but also connects people with the land and the changing seasons, emphasizing the importance of native plants and cultural practises. Urti is highly nutritious - high in Vitamin C & E, magnesium, zinc & iron. Collecting Urti is a symbol of cultural heritage and learning between generations. Sharing our stories of urti creates a sense of community and belonging.
