IWIRI TEXTILE PROJECT PART 2

Continuing textile explorations, Iwiri Artists participated in workshops across February and March 2023, to experiment with new techniques and build on what they had previously learnt.

Fabric manipulation workshops took place over six weeks and were facilitated by Rosie Hannam. Techniques explored included lino cut stamping, embroidery, felting, and hand dying.

Artists used multiple techniques together to build work up over multiple sessions. This weekly workshop approach supported artists to build confidence through hands-on practice and allowed participants opportunities to navigate towards techniques they enjoyed and best suited their individual abilities.

The most successful of these techniques was hand-cut block printing. A body of work was developed and presented alongside a range of ceramics that show the connection between the style of mark making in both mediums.

The exhibition held at Jam Factory Collect gallery from 30 September – 3 December 2023 was celebrated with a performance by the Iwiri Choir (wearing the uniform outcome from the initial screen-printing project) at the opening night.

The project was funded by The Australia Council for the Arts, Flourish program
