CEDUNA MARINE DEBRIS TARNANTHI 2023 PUBLIC PROGRAM

Ku Arts oversaw a 4-week intensive skills development program in Ceduna across marine debris weaving techniques to create a large-scale sculpture that was presented at the Tarnanthi Art Fair as the Public Program.

Experienced marine debris facilitator and artist Cecile Williams travelled from Western Australia to work in situ at Arts Ceduna, supporting a core group of artists to conceptualise, draw, scope, plan, design, build and weave a 6-metre-long Leafy Sea Dragon.

Artists included Collette Gray (Gugada), Janine Gray (Wirangu/Gugada), Sherrie Jones (Yindjibarndi), Beaver Lennon (Mirning), Terase Kelly (Wirangu), Sharon Gray (Gugada), and Sonya Coleman (Wirangu), supported by Western Australian sculptor Cecile Williams, volunteers Peter Keelan, Pam Diment and Ku Arts staff, Lisa Phillips, Arts Projects Manager and Mel Henderson, Arts Program Producer.

The Leafy Sea Dragon was transported to Adelaide for the general public to work on at Tarnanthi art fair, with hundreds of hands weaving the sculpture was completed on the final day.

The outcome, a show-stopping sculpture, was a resounding success for public engagement, receiving positive feedback and enquiries across the Art Fair weekend and will be on display at WOMAdelaide 2024.
